The journey began at the point of control: remote systems for cars, planes, and massive machinery like submarine cable-laying engines. The scope expanded to encompass any interconnected structure—including ecosystems themselves. The fundamental lesson was always the same: understand the connections, learn to listen to the signals, and then identify the levers.
The Magic in the Messages
The last 20 years have been dedicated to the magic in the messages—both physical and digital. What signal actuates a servo? What feedback confirms the motion? What protocol ensures a command reaches its destination intact, and how do we confirm its receipt across continents?
My focus lives in the interconnections: the electric relay that opens a hydraulic valve, spinning a tire that moves a cable suspended from a ship riding an ocean swell. But equally, in the logical pathways that carry intent: the routing table that determines how a packet traverses global fiber, the QoS policy that prioritizes a voice call over streaming data, the authentication handshake that establishes trust between systems.
Network Engineering: The Delicate Web
For a decade, I specialized in building the delicate web of Network Engineering—ensuring messages flow reliably from people to people, people to machines, and machines to machines. This layer is the nervous system: designing the VLAN architecture that segments hospital traffic from guest Wi-Fi, tuning P-bits that decide the quality of a video feed, implementing the VPN tunnels that let a remote technician securely troubleshoot a relay in Singapore from a desk in Seattle.
Translating Intent into Action
Every touchpoint—whether a copper contact closing or a TCP handshake completing—is a translation of intent into action. The mechanical layer executes; the network layer delivers. Understanding both, and precisely how they interconnect, is where true system mastery lives.
Collaborator & Communicator
I am a collaborator and a communicator. My role is to connect everyone and everything—people to systems, data to action, intention to outcome. The foundational work with physical systems has forged a deep, practical understanding of how signals create reality.
